Meat balls:

  • 400g minced meat
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tbs dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp of paprika
  • 1/2 tsp of ground ginger
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 5 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 onion, grated


  • 5 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbs ketchup
  • 1/4 tsp sesame oil
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tbs hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 tbs corn starch
  • 1/2 tbs cold water
  • 3 green onions, chopped, to garnish
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds to garnish


Chop onions and mince garlic

Whisk eggs in a large bowl

Add meatball seasoning –  salt, paprika, ginger powder, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. In a food processor, blend onion and garlic then add to mixture.

Add in panko breadcrumbs and mix well

Add the mixture to the minced meat and make sure it is properly mixed together

Create round medium sized meatballs

Brown meatballs in a pan for about 2 minutes on each side just to get a crisp outer layer

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and pre-heat oven to 250°C

Take meatballs from pan onto baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or till fully cooked through

To make the sauce; in a pot  over medium heat whisk together the brown sugar, minced garlic cloves, soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil, water, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar and red wine vinegar. Bring to a boil and then let simmer for about 10 minutes.

Make a mixture of the 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch and 1/2 tablespoon cold water.  Pour the mixture into the pot and continue to simmer sauce for 5 minutes as it thickens and then take off the stove. It will continue to thicken .

Stir meatballs into sauce and coat well

Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Toast sesame seeds in a pan to bring out their full flavor before garnishing.

Serve with boiled jasmine rice
